The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has urged the public to avoid setting bush fires during the harmattan season to prevent damage to property and loss of life.
NEMA’s Head of Operations in Edo State, Ojuedene Kenoma, made this call at a workshop aimed at training local government officials and volunteers on disaster prevention, response, and management.
“Disasters such as tanker accidents, fire outbreaks, or other emergencies occur unexpectedly. It is essential to cultivate a culture of preparedness, awareness and effective response, particularly at the grassroots,” he said.
The workshop was designed to equip people with the skills and knowledge needed to handle emergencies effectively. Kenoma explained that the volunteers trained at the event would share their expertise with local residents, improving fire safety and emergency responses in vulnerable areas.
Superintendent Asimu Sumaila from the Federal Fire Service noted that carelessness is a major cause of fires, responsible for 80% of incidents. He urged the public to take fire safety seriously, use fire extinguishers properly, and follow safety advice to reduce the risk of accidents.
The event highlighted the crucial role of individuals and communities in preventing and managing emergencies, especially during harmattan when the risk of fires is much higher.
