Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has expressed his desire to keep Marcus Rashford at the club following the forward’s recent comments hinting at a potential exit from Old Trafford.
Rashford, 27, was benched during Sunday’s 2-1 victory against Manchester City and later suggested on social media that he might consider leaving for a new challenge. A product of United’s youth academy, Rashford has scored 138 goals in 426 appearances since debuting in 2016. However, his recent performances have come under scrutiny, leading to his omission from England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Speaking ahead of United’s League Cup quarter-final clash with Tottenham, Amorim, who took charge of the club in November, addressed the situation.
“No, I’ve not spoken to him yet,” Amorim said. “Yesterday was a day off, but he’s our player, and he’s ready for the next game.”
When asked about Rashford’s future, Amorim was clear: “Of course, I want him to stay. This club needs big talents, and Marcus is a big talent. My focus is on helping him perform at the highest level.”
Amorim also suggested that Rashford’s “new challenge” could be found at United itself, as the team aims to regain its former glory. Currently sitting 13th in the Premier League, United faces one of the toughest periods in its storied history.
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou, whose team faces United next, downplayed speculation linking Spurs with a potential January move for Rashford.
“There’s always noise about Manchester United. Where have you been?” Postecoglou quipped during his press conference.
“I have no interest in speculating about another team’s player. Rashford is a very good player, but I focus on my squad and my players,” he said. Despite reports of Tottenham’s interest in Rashford, Postecoglou maintained his stance.
Both Amorim and Postecoglou will be hoping their respective teams deliver a strong performance when they meet in the League Cup quarter-final on Thursday.
