The Nigerian House of Representatives will present President Bola Tinubu with N704.91 million on December 31, 2024, for the benefit of underprivileged Nigerians who have suffered economic hardship as a result of the elimination of the petrol subsidy.
Recall that on July 18, the House voted to cut 50% of its salary for six months to address the difficulties faced by ordinary Nigerians in response to a motion submitted during a plenary session.
Following a resolution by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, the House resolved in July to contribute half of their wages to address Nigerians’ hunger needs as part of attempts to put an end to the bad governance protests.
While moving the motion, Kalu stated, “This government is doing its best, but one year is insufficient to confront the difficulties facing this country. I ask our colleagues to make a 50% sacrifice for six months. Our monthly compensation is N600,000. I’d like to request that we forego 50% of our salaries for six months.”
Addressing his colleagues during Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Tajudeen Abba stated, “If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to pay half of our salaries to address the pressing needs of the Nigerian people. I am pleased to inform you that we have thus far contributed N704,907,578.82.
“On December 31, I will lead a delegation of leadership to hand over the money to the President for the exclusive use of vulnerable Nigerians in need.
“The contributions you made highlight the steadfastness and dedication of members to addressing the critical needs of Nigerians.”
