The Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, in collaboration with the Lagos State Task Force, has launched a week-long operation aimed at addressing the issue of beggars, miscreants, and other social vices across the state.
This initiative, undertaken in response to public complaints, seeks to remove destitute individuals, miscreants, and children involved in street begging, which have been described as environmental nuisances and potential security threats.
Speaking on the exercise, Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, explained:
“The operation was prompted by numerous messages and calls from residents across Lagos raising security concerns. These complaints became so frequent that the relevant MDAs had to act immediately. The exercise, so far, has been highly successful.”
He continued:
“Since the operation began, we have rescued a significant number of adults and children from the streets of Lagos. All those rescued have been taken to our rehabilitation centres for care, rehabilitation, and reintegration into society.
“While efforts are underway to reunite children with their families, the adults will undergo empowerment programmes to acquire skills that will enable them to become productive and economically self-reliant.”
The operation covered major areas, including Awolowo Way to Falomo Roundabout in Ikoyi, Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue, Lekki Road, and other parts of Lagos.
During the raid, 27 individuals were rescued, including 15 minors involved in unlawful street trading and begging. Ogunlende confirmed, “All those apprehended will be transferred to the appropriate government facilities in line with relevant laws.”
