Former federal legislator Shehu Sani has criticised President Bola Tinubu for claiming he has no interest in investigating military spending under his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari.
Sani, who served in the 8th National Assembly as the representative for Kaduna Central Senatorial District, claimed that the president’s position ran counter to his investigation into the previous operations of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under the troubled apex bank president Godwin Emefiele.
In a media interaction on Monday, Tinubu stated that he would not look into military spending under Buhari. However, Sani, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today show on Tuesday, claimed that doing so would be equivalent to rewarding corruption and theft.
“You still have to look back and see how public funds that were looted have been recovered when you find yourself in this position, especially with a nation facing these critical issues like ours,” the former lawmaker stated.
“I think we have been doing that with what has happened in the CBN the last time.
“However, I believe Tinubu made it apparent that he is more interested in going forward than going backwards when one of the panellists asked him about the stealing and the poor management of the security and defence services during the Buhari administration, which he needed to look into. It’s counterintuitive since you can go backwards in CBN but not security.
“In my opinion, he ought to have taken action to recoup public funds if he had been presented with proof that there were blatant instances of corruption. That was intended to be the response.
“It is more like rewarding larceny that he has committed by stating that he will not return if you say that whatever happened in the past is gone.”
Sani asserted that since every member of his cabinet is performing, the president should be held responsible for all of his policies and the deeds of his ministers.
“Tinubu ought to be held accountable for the events that transpired during his administration. He has made economic improvements. He has begun, and although Nigerians are going through a lot of hardship, it is a historical and global fact that economic reforms have never been well-liked by the populace,” he stated.
