A London judge on Thursday banned British grime star Stormzy from driving for nine months after he was caught using his phone while behind the wheel of a Rolls-Royce in west Kensington.
District Judge Andrew Sweet issued the ban at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court following Stormzy’s guilty plea via letter for the March 2023 offence.
The 31-year-old rapper, whose real name is Michael Ebenazer Owuo Jr, was also fined £2,010 after six penalty points were added to his licence. Stormzy had already accrued six points for a previous speeding violation, exceeding the 12-point threshold for disqualification.
Judge Sweet criticised Stormzy’s driving record as “not good” and described his actions as “dangerous and irresponsible.”
Stormzy’s lawyer, Peter Csemiczky, stated that the artist accepted responsibility and expressed his apologies.
A leading figure in the grime scene, Stormzy made history in 2019 as the first black UK solo artist to headline the Glastonbury music festival, with his hits now a staple in British pop culture.
