The secretary of security and civilian protection announced in a statement that a manhunt had been initiated to find the culprits of the shooting that took place in the city of Villahermosa in Tabasco State on Saturday night.
It stated that seven individuals were hurt and five people died.
“Video surveillance camera analysis is underway, and state and federal authorities have deployed coordinated patrols to find and apprehend those responsible,” the statement continued.
Bloodied victims were scattered on the floor as unknown shooters stormed into the club La Casita Azul and started shooting at patrons, according to local media.
Violent crime has increased recently in Tabasco, which is home to oil extraction plants.
In November, another armed attack on a Villahermosa pub left six people dead and ten injured.
It happened two weeks after a pub was attacked in Queretaro, a core area that had hitherto been immune to organised crime-related violence, killing ten people.
The same weekend, a shooting in a pub in a Mexico City suburb claimed six lives.
Official estimates show that since the government sent the army to fight drug trafficking in 2006, drug-related violence has killed over 450,000 people in Mexico.
