Hundreds of supporters of impeached South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol gathered outside his residence in central Seoul on Wednesday, protesting a fresh arrest warrant issued as investigators prepare to take action. Yoon has resisted arrest and refused questioning following his controversial martial law decree on December 3, which triggered the country’s worst political crisis in decades.
Despite sub-zero temperatures, Yoon’s base rallied in defense of the suspended leader. “Witnessing their resilience against the wind and cold, I am confident President Yoon Suk Yeol will return,” said Lee Hye-sook, a 57-year-old supporter. Some demonstrators showed solidarity with US-style slogans, waving American flags and leaving flowers at the gates.
Investigators secured a new arrest warrant on Tuesday after the initial seven-day order expired. If they succeed, Yoon would become the first sitting South Korean president to be arrested. His legal team confirmed Yoon remains inside his residence, and the investigation team is preparing for another attempt.
The impeachment trial is set to begin on January 14, with Yoon’s legal team confirming he plans to attend, though security concerns remain unresolved.
