Spanish coastguards have rescued a newborn baby and its mother from an inflatable vessel carrying migrants to the Canary Islands, authorities reported on Wednesday.
The rescue took place on Monday as the migrants attempted the perilous Atlantic crossing from Africa, a route that has claimed thousands of lives. “Christmas ended in the Canaries with the rescue of a baby born while crossing the sea,” the coastguard announced on X.
The mother and baby were among a large group of migrants aboard the vessel. After being rescued, they were transported by helicopter to Arrecife on Lanzarote.
This latest rescue highlights the ongoing risks faced by migrants taking the Atlantic route. In 2024, a record 46,843 undocumented migrants reached the Canary Islands, according to official data.
