The African Nations Championship (CHAN), scheduled to begin in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania in February, has been moved to August as the organisers announced on Tuesday that the stadiums were not ready.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) said that while there had been “good progress” in constructing and upgrading facilities, additional time was necessary.
Regarded as the second-tier tournament in Africa, CHAN allows only locally-based players to participate, with 19 nations involved. It is viewed as a precursor to the primary African Cup of Nations, which is set to take place in East Africa for the first time in 2027.
“I have faith that the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other necessary infrastructure and facilities will meet the required CAF standards for hosting a highly successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship in August 2025,” said CAF President Patrice Motsepe.
Last month, a team of CAF experts visited the three countries and raised concerns that the two principal stadiums in Nairobi—the Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium—had not been finished, giving them until December 31 to demonstrate progress.
