The Nigerian House of Representatives has urged the provision of scholarships and complimentary medical services, including priority treatment, for the children and families of the nation’s servicemen and women during the Armed forces remembrance.
This comes as lawmakers emphasised the importance of honouring the sacrifices made by the Armed Forces of Nigeria in safeguarding national unity and contributing to global peace.
The appeal was made during the first plenary session of 2025, chaired by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu. The session began with announcements and the presentation of petitions, followed by a motion of urgent national importance focusing on recognising the contributions of Nigeria’s armed forces.
The House acknowledged the steadfast commitment, courage, and professionalism demonstrated by the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force in addressing various security challenges across the nation.
Lawmakers called on the federal government to enhance support for the armed forces through increased funding and budgetary allocations. They also highlighted the strategic importance of ensuring transparency and accountability within the Armed Forces while advocating further capacity development.
In addition,a member of the house proposed special recognition for exemplary servicemen and women, as well as prioritised care for their families. Reflecting on his own military experience abroad, one member noted the motivational impact of awards and certificates, stating that in the US, a certificate of recognition from the National Assembly holds significant value. He urged that they should adopt similar practices to boost morale among the Nigerian Armed Forces, while also considering the welfare of those they leave behind.
The motion, introduced by Honourable Babaji May Benson, received overwhelming support, with lawmakers committing to doing more for the nation’s military personnel.
In their resolution, house of representatives stressed the importance of honouring both the living and the fallen members of the Armed Forces while recognising the immense sacrifices made by military families in service to the nation.
