News Central TV organised a town hall meeting on Thursday, January 16, 2025, to address the concerns of those affected by the failed Kano Pfizer drug trial that occurred 29 years ago. The meeting provided a platform for victims to share their stories, demand justice, and call for compensation for the harm they endured.
One of the victims, Nafiu Uba Indabawa, expressed his appreciation to News Central for creating a platform where their voices could be heard. He urged the organisers of the Townhall Meeting to amplify the voices of those affected by the Pfizer drug experiment in 1996.
The Pfizer drug trial took place during a meningitis outbreak and involved testing Trovan, an experimental antibiotic, on 200 children. Reports indicate that five children who received Trovan and six who received the standard treatment, ceftriaxone, died. Many others were left with disabilities.
Tragically, those living with disabilities as a result of the trial continue to face discrimination in their communities.
Another victim, Ruqayyah Salisu, recounted her harrowing experience as one of the victims of the Pfizer drug trial. “Twenty-six years ago, we were taken to the hospital for treatment, and the result was disastrous. After we were given medication, some of us died while others were left disabled,” she said. “We’ve been called here to restate the issues and ensure compensation for everyone.”
She further noted that of all the people affected by the trial, only a few received compensation.
Salisu Abdullahi, another victim of the Kano-Pfizer drug experiment, expressed gratitude to News Central for providing a platform to address the tragic event that occurred nearly three decades ago. He called for justice, emphasising that not all victims had been compensated.
Bilkisu Saidu Abass, who lost the use of her limbs after being administered the drug in 1996, shared her emotional testimony. “I was told that I was given the Pfizer drug in 1996. After the medication, I became disabled. We later heard that some people were compensated, but I didn’t get any compensation,” she said.
“I want to study a lot, but Pfizer denied me this. Also, I’m beautiful, and I want to move around in my full beauty. Pfizer denied me of this,” she added. “I love trading a lot. Many see me and admire me, but when they see my disability, they draw back.”
