The Inspector-General of Police, Dr Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has called for the removal of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) from the envelope budgetary regime to enhance efficiency and operational capacity.
Egbetokun made this appeal on Thursday, January 16 2025, while defending the NPF’s 2025 budget before the Joint Committees on Police Affairs and Police Institutions at the National Assembly Complex, Abuja.
This was disclosed in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.
Egbetokun, in his presentation, emphasised that the current envelope budgetary system restricts accurate funding projections and operational flexibility. He proposed the creation of a Special Operations Account dedicated to national security emergencies, alongside increased allocations for Overhead and Capital Expenditure.
The IGP was accompanied by the Force Management Team and senior officers, with key attendees including Senator Abdulhamid Mallam Maidori (Chairman, Senate Committee on Police Affairs), Honourable Makki Yalleman (Chairman, House Committee on Police Affairs), Senator (Dr) Ibrahim Gaidam (Minister of Police Affairs), and DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd.), Chairman of the Police Service Commission.
The IGP also highlighted the need for funds to construct five new zonal headquarters and support tactical units critical to internal security. He further advocated for dedicated budget lines for police training institutions to enhance capacity building and improve service delivery.
Additionally, he emphasised the importance of the timely and full release of appropriated funds in 2025 for the efficient functioning of the Force.
Expressing his gratitude to the Joint Committees for their engagement, the IGP reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to collaborating with all stakeholders to achieve a secure and stable nation through improved funding and resource allocation.
