The Taraba State University (TSU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called off its current strike after barely one month.
On December 5, 2024, the group began a strike in protest of the incomplete execution of many Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) and Memoranda of Action (MoAs) that the union and the Taraba State Government had reached since 2014.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the TSU ASUU noted that the university’s budget, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), staff pensions and gratuities, the backlog of salaries, the governing council’s structure, and minimum wage changes were among the main issues that the union said had been resolved.
It stated that under Taraba State Law No. 4 of 2008, the government has promised to increase university funding through the Governing Council.
Additionally, according to the ASUU Taraba branch, 10% of the total amount accumulated has already been paid out as an initial Earned Academic Allowance (EAA) payment.
After that, starting in February 2025, 5% of the total amount will be released each month until all of the arrears have been paid in full.
It further stated that a State-Defined Pension Scheme with particular requirements for the timely and effective delivery of benefits has been authorised by the government.
“Backlog of Salaries: By the first week of February 2025, a template for settling arrears will be finalised.
“The University Governing Council’s Constitution: Membership will be modified to meet legal obligations.
“The government has implemented the wage and consequential adjustments, with a commitment to timely salary payments.
“The ASUU-TSU Chapter hereby suspends the strike action with immediate effect, under the aforementioned agreements and with the consent of ASUU National,” the statement read in part.
The ASUU expressed its sincere gratitude to the TSU Congress, its national leadership, and its zonal leadership for their steadfast support, which the Union claimed was the key to the conflict’s peaceful conclusion.
