The Nigerian Institution of Marine Engineers and Naval Architects (NIMENA) has elected Engr. Eferebo Sylvanus as its new chairman to lead the institution for the next year. His election, alongside other executive members, took place during an extraordinary general meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in a process described as free and fair.
Engr. Sylvanus outlined his vision to elevate NIMENA to international prominence by establishing a journal house for publishing research and development outputs. He emphasised the importance of addressing Nigeria’s and Africa’s maritime challenges through innovative solutions, aiming to contribute significantly to the continent’s development.
The new chairman highlighted the need for improved regulatory standards and enforcement mechanisms in the maritime sector, which he noted have caused substantial revenue losses for Nigeria. According to him, the sector has the potential to generate over $40 billion annually if properly regulated and supported by research and development initiatives. He pledged NIMENA’s active collaboration with regulatory agencies, policymakers, and stakeholders to advance the sector.
Engr. Sylvanus also announced plans for a robust membership drive, with a committee already established to engage undergraduate marine engineers, young practitioners, and others. This initiative aims to address their challenges, expand membership, and offer enhanced benefits. His administration will prioritise workshops, technical sessions, and interactions with government agencies and similar institutions to foster collaboration and promote the maritime sector’s growth.
He assured continuity by building on the programs of his predecessor, including drafting and disseminating a communiqué based on recommendations from the institution’s last conference. Engr. Sylvanus reiterated his commitment to the safety and development of Nigeria’s waterways.
The immediate past chairman, Engr. Dr. Daniel Tamunodukobipi, commended the transparent election process and urged the new leadership to sustain ongoing initiatives to ensure safer waterways. He emphasised the importance of public enlightenment campaigns and the development of safety codes and standards through partnerships with government agencies.
Other elected executives include Engr. Bhine Obom Amartari as National Vice Chairman, Engr. Dr. Azubuike John Chuku as National General Secretary, Engr. King Wugha as National Publicity Secretary, and Engr. Henry Unuigbe as ex-officio. The new leadership is expected to steer NIMENA toward greater impact and influence within the maritime sector.
