A building collapse on Tuesday at the Mega Mall Estate, Mobile Road, Ikota, in Lekki, Lagos, claimed one life and injured four others.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident, stating that “one adult male lost his life in the building collapse, while four others sustained serious injuries.”
Rescue efforts are ongoing as emergency responders from LASEMA, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and the police work tirelessly to retrieve those trapped under the rubble. Two victims have already been successfully rescued.
Eyewitnesses revealed that most of the victims were construction workers who were on-site when the building, still under construction, crumbled at approximately 3:00 pm.
Speaking about the ongoing rescue operations, the Lagos State Commandant of the NSCDC, Mr. Adedotun Keshinro, shared updates:
“A distress call from concerned residents was received that a two-storey building under construction collapsed, with workers trapped inside, at about 1500hrs around the Ikota axis of Lekki. While the search, rescue, and recovery operation is ongoing, the Command’s personnel at the scene have confirmed the successful rescue of two persons alive,” he stated.
Personnel from the Eti-Osa Police Division and other emergency services remain at the scene, working to ensure that all victims are accounted for.
