The Federation of Uganda Football Federations (FUFA) has announced that the domestic league will not resume and has been “concluded” due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to an official statement, the body’s emergency executive committee reached the decision “after thorough consideration of all stakeholders’ interests and issues at hand.”
The federation applied Article 18, Section 1, Sub-section C & D of the FUFA Competition rules to declare Vipers FC, who led the standings with 54 points from 25 matches, 4 points ahead of KCCA, as champions with five matches remaining when the season was halted. Vipers will now represent Uganda in the CAF Champions League.
The article reads:
“Where the league format due to circumstances of force majeure fails to be completed within the season, the league winner shall be determined as follows:
- Where at least one club has played more than 75% of the league games, the following formula shall be used by TOC (Terms of Conditions) to determine the league positions.
- Total number of points earned from the number of games played multiplied by the total number of games supposed to be played divided by the number of games played.”
Maroons FC, Proline FC and Tooro United have been relegated with UPDF and Myda FC gaining promotion to the top tier.
Amongst its other decisions, FUFA announced that the Women’s Super League, Regional, Juniors and district leagues have all been canceled. The federation also disclosed that it is still monitoring the situation regarding the men’s domestic cup and its decision to conclude the competition.
FUFA has supported the fight against Covid-19 in Uganda by donating 12.5 tonnes of rice to the National Taskforce. 10 tonnes of the 12.5 tonnes were given to male and female players in the top and 2nd tier Leagues.
Uganda is the latest African country to abandon plans to resume its league campaigns, which have been curtailed by the Covid-19 pandemic. The DR Congo, Kenya, Angola and Cameroon are some of the countries that have ended their domestic campaigns.
