Mamelodi Sundowns missed the chance to go top of the South African Absa
Premiership on Tuesday night. The Brazilians were held to a 1-1 draw at
home by Polokwane City which meant they failed to topple leaders Bidvest
Wits at the top.
Sundowns opened the scoring inside the first 10 minutes when Themba
Zwane finished off a well-executed move from Gaston Sirino at the near
post.
The hosts seemed to be coasting until goalkeeper Denis Onyango failed to
hold on to a Salulani Phiri effort, the ball deflected off the shot
stopper and into his own net to hand Polokwane the equalizer on the
stroke of halftime.
Sundowns coach, Pitso Mosimane said after the game, “Denis has been
outstanding for us in recent domestic and African matches but, being a
perfectionist, he will be really upset by the own goal.”
Bidvest Wits stay top of the table with 37 points from 20 matches,
Sundowns 35 from 18 and Orlando Pirates 33 and Cape Town City 30 from 19
make up the top four.
