Police in Ogun State have confirmed that three cows strayed into the premises of Professor Wole Soyinka at Ilugun Village, Kemta Idi-Aba, Abeokuta on Tuesday, February 9th, 2021.
The Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun dispelled claims on social media that it was an assassination attempt. The owner of the cow, Kazeem Sorinola a Yoruba farmer and his herder, Awwal mumini, a Fulani boy are currently with the Police.
The Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun says, against claims on social media that it was an assassination attempt, what happened was a trespass, and the owner of the Cow is a Yoruba farmer not a Fulani herdsman.
Ajogun who visited the residence with men of the Nigeria Police Force assured the Nobel leaureate that the officers will continue to watch the environment although the incidence is not a willful trespass.
He urged Nigerians to desist from sensationalising unverified messages on social media in the interest of the country.
The incident comes days after Soyinka told President Muhammadu Buhari to speak out and act decisively to contain the herdsmen crisis lest it descends into a civil war.
In an earlier interview with BBC Pidgin, Soyinka had described the herdsmen crisis as a war “right on our door steps”.
