The Tunisian General Labor Union (UGTT) is planning to organise a regional strike in Sousse. The labour union is protesting the government’s failure to meet its demands in securing employment and development opportunities for denizens. The union stated that the strike is slated for May 20, 2021. This decision was made at the end of a regional council meeting held Sunday with Deputy Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labour Union (French: UGTT) Sami Tahri in attendance.
Secretary-General of the labour union’s regional chapter Kacem Zemi stated that the strike aims to denounce an ongoing marginalisation policy and decry a downturn in business as many enterprises were folding up while laying off workers.
Other critical sectors such as health and education are also facing difficulties over inadequate infrastructure and staffing.
The Union had announced a similar strike across a number of states of the country including Gafsa, in southwestern Tunisia, eastern-central Sfax region, western-central Kasserine region among others.
