It was an emotional scene on Tuesday as a Cameroonian woman tearfully approached Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison after his Press Conference, seeking asylum for her family members and other Cameroonians.
The woman, simply known as Lilian, went on her knees as she asked the Prime Minister for what many would have tagged impossible but her pleas were answered as Morrison promised that authorities will help her and her family.
The moment was caught on camera in Queensland where Morrison had fielded questions on Australia’s banning of citizens traveling from India.
“I’ve lost half of all my family. I’ve got no family left if you don’t help me. Everybody will die. Help me, help me,” she pleaded with the PM.
Anglophone southern Cameroon has been embroiled in battles mainly owing to complaints of being maligned and excluded from the benefits enjoyed by the Francophonie part of the country.
Australia has a hardline stance on asylum as asylum seekers are sent to an offshore detention camp in the country.
The growing struggles between Anglophone Cameroon known as Ambazonia Republic has led to the death of at least 3,500 locals and the displacement of 700,000.
The leaders of the secessionist Ambazonia led by Julius Ayuk Tabe, were arrested in Nigeria in 2017 and are currently facing life imprisonment.
