The Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) has suspended all sporting activities and events with effect from Saturday the 3rd of July 2021.
The SRC said the move is necessitated by the continued rise in coronavirus infections in the country. Zimbabwe is in the grip of a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, with 1,357 new cases recorded on Thursday, and 1,331 cases recorded the previous day.
Only athletes preparing for the 2021 Paralympic and Olympic games, cricket, the Warriors’ preparation for the COSAFA Cup tournament, as well as the Charles Manyuchi title bout are exempted.
The Chibuku Super Cup tournament, which was recently given the green light to proceed while adhering to measures put in place by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to mitigate the spread of the virus, has also been suspended.
The statement further stated, “For the avoidance of doubt, this suspension extends to the ZIFA-PSL tournament for the Chibuku Super Cup and all sports previously classified as low risk.
Also affected by the ban are all sports previously classified as low risk. All national sports associations, clubs, gyms, etc have been ordered to suspend their activities.”
The SRC will review the suspension on a weekly basis.
