At least 54 people have died from a cholera outbreak in six Local Government Areas in the Federal Capital Territory, Nigeria. The outbreak also affected about 604 people.
The Minister of State for FCT, Hajiya Ramatu Tijjani Aliyu, disclosed the figures when she flagged off community sensitization on cholera and other disease outbreaks in the Nigerian capital.
Aliyu, who flagged-off the sensitisation campaign at the palace of Zuba’s Agora, says over 120 communities are involved across the six area councils with AMAC having the highest cases followed by Gwagwalada and Bwari area councils respectively.
Aliyu encouraged people to maintain good hygiene practices, dispose properly of sewage and refuse, wash their hands regularly and take in clean water to prevent further infection.
The Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) had last week disclosed that a cholera outbreak killed 325 people in 15 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) between January and June of this year.
The health agency said that 14,343 suspected cases of cholera were reported from 15 states and the FCT during the period.
According to the report, about 27 per cent of suspected cases across the country are in the 5-14 years bracket.
