German national airline, Lufthansa on Sunday connected its first flight to Kenyan tourism city, Mombasa as the East African country makes first attempts to revive its tourism industry after COVID-19 sent it in ruins.
Lufthansa’s “Eurosong Discover” aircraft completed the flight to the coastal city located in Southern Kenya. It landed at the Moi International Airport, Mombasa, a city central to Kenya’s returns on tourism, the country’s highest source of foreign exchange after agriculture.
Lufthansa’s first landing was greeted with fanfare at the airport as a local dancing troupe cheered the travelers and the crowd at the airport. Minister of Tourism and Wildlife, Najib Balala said the flight means their country has progressed in its tourism.
Lufthansa is expected to fly to Mombasa two times every week, with the flights expected to connect Europe to Kenya despite the presence of the pandemic.
“Kenya has been making great progress as a destination is attracting tourists from different markets, and especially from Europe. This flight is yet another milestone in the recovery of activities in the country,” Balala said at the completion and landing of the flight.
“Europe is a market that offers us a different opportunity. With the vaccination of citizens, more people will be looking forward to traveling and we want to be ready for this,” Balala added.
The wildebeest migration in the Mara in Kenya, the 8th Wonder of the World was greeted with cheers throughout the world with Kenya gradually retracing its touristic steps after the pandemic tested its resolve.
With the world gradually opening up, after such a long time of restrictions and holdbacks, the World Bank has predicted the Kenyan economy may be 4.5% better than where it was in 202.
