The Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU) has suspended the national strike that was slated to kick off today, Monday, August 30 across all 35 universities.
According to a statement from the union’s Secretary-General, Constantine Wesonga, the move was to give room for dialogue with the Government.
“Uasu national executive committee has directed that the union suspends its strike notice to give a final chance to dialogue,” said Wasonga.
The union’s top executive members had held a crisis meeting over the weekend in Nairobi with the Principal Secretary for University Education and Research, Simon Nabukwesi to review the progress on the conciliation process made by the Ministry of Labour.
At the meeting, both parties agreed to review the outcome of the talks between the union and Inter-Public Universities Council Consultative Forum (IPUCCF) under the auspices of the National Implementation Committee (NIC) over the stalled implementation of the 2017-2021 collective bargaining agreement (CBA).
Most of the public universities had not implemented the CBA, sparking calls for a boycott by the union’s national office through a notice of strike issued on August 23.
