Chelsea lost 3-2 to West Ham United on Saturday after coming from behind twice and winning with a late goal from substitute Congolese defender Arthur Masuaku.
In the 87th minute, Masuaku beat Edouard Mendy with what appeared to be a cross, but it flew into the near corner for his first Premier League goal in his 96th game.
“It was very fortunate the goal, let’s not kid ourselves. Truthfully I didn’t think we played that well today, but we got the goals,” West Ham manager David Moyes told BT Sport.
After 28 minutes, Chelsea appeared to be in control when Thiago Silva headed in a Mason Mount corner that West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski could only touch onto a post.
On the other end, the 37 year-old Brazilian cleared Vladimir Coufal’s goal-bound shot moments later.
Nevertheless, the European champions gave the hosts a way back into the game when Jorginho put Edouard Mendy under pressure with a back pass in the 40th minute.
Jarrod Bowen was fouled by Mendy for a penalty that was converted by Manuel Lanzini.
Within four minutes, Chelsea had regained the lead after Mount, back to his best after an absence due to wisdom teeth, connected with a long pass from Hakim Ziyech for a volley that caught Fabianski at his near post.
At the start of the second half, Chelsea substituted Romelu Lukaku for the hobbling Kai Havertz, giving the Belgian striker much-needed minutes in his quest to improve his match fitness following an injury.
In the 56th minute, Bowen struck hard and low from the edge of the box to equalize for West Ham.
Masuaku scored the surprise goal in the 82nd minute after Bowen could not convert a cross from Michail Antonio. Jorginho had a shot deflected wide before Bowen failed to convert a cross from Michail Antonio in the 75th minute.
It was the first time Chelsea conceded more than one goal this season.
“It is impossible to make so many mistakes and expect a result,” Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel said.
Chelsea are one point ahead of Manchester City, who travel to Watford later on Saturday, and two points ahead of Liverpool, who travel to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Hammers are currently fourth in the Premier League with 27 points, six points behind Chelsea.
