Over 10 secondary school students of the Ojodu Grammar school, Lagos Nigeria are feared dead after a truck ran them over on Tuesday afternoon.
According to eyewitnesses, the accident which occurred at about 3:00 pm claimed the lives of over 10 students with others injured from the scene.
Another account claimed that “15 students are dead already and still counting” even though official casualty figures have not been announced by security and emergency officials.
While the cause of the accident is yet to be known, Eons Intelligence, an emergency alert provider, said “reports indicate that activities of Road safety & VIO led to an articulated vehicle losing control, killing several schoolchildren, injured others in Ojodu Berger Lagos, axis.
Some video footage from the scene showed a crowd of people who have taken over the road extending to the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in protest of the loss of student lives.
Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, confirmed the incident. They were said to have been crushed while waiting to cross to the other side of the road
The truck driver, the police commissioner explained, attempted to escape after hitting the schoolchildren.
But the driver was later arrested by operatives attached to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ojodu who went after him after he fled the scene.
Eons Intelligence warns that the “area is volatile with personnel from RRS using tear gas to disperse people. Avoid the area.”
Meanwhile, reports gathered that police and other security personnel have also arrived the scene to ensure calm is restored.
