Egypt has retrieved from Spain 36 pieces of antiquities that were smuggled out in 2014, according to the Egyptian Public Prosecution.
A delegation from the Egyptian Public Prosecution, accompanied by the Egyptian ambassador to Spain, Youssef Diaeldin Mekkawy received the artefacts from the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid, capital of Spain.
A statement said the delegation will handle the packaging and shipment of the recovered artefacts to Egypt in preparation for their delivery to Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
The antiquities were smuggled into Spain in 2014, when the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was notified by Spanish authorities that 36 Egyptian artefacts from Alexandria had been seized at the Spanish port of Valencia, according to the statement.
