The Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) says coffee exports in December jumped by 28 per cent from the same month last year.
The UCDA said that higher yields from newly matured trees contributed to the increase.
The East African nation exported 536,889 60-kg bags of coffee last month, an increase of 28 per cent from a year earlier, according to UCDA.
“Increasing coffee exports during the month compared to the previous year was due to newly planted coffee which started yielding, supported by favourable weather,’’ the report said.
Uganda exported 6.77 million bags of coffee worth USD 718.57 million during the period covered by the report (January to December 2021) compared to 5.49 million bags worth USD 520.01 million in the previous year (January to December 2020).
“This represents an increase in both quality and value of 23% and 38%, respectively,” states the report.
Ten exporters exported 72% of the total volume, out of 49 companies that performed during the month, compared to 80% in November 2021.
In December 2021, 536,889 60-kilogram bags of coffee valued at USD 75.25 million were exported at an average weighted price of USD 2.34 per kilo, 8 cents more than USD 2.26 per kilo in November 2021 and 85 cents more than USD 1.49 per kilo in December 2020.
“This was an increase of 28% and 101% in quantity and value respectively compared to the same month last year.”
As of December 2021, Italy had the highest market share of Uganda’s coffee exports, with 37.11 percent, up from 32.76% the previous month. With 17.38%, Germany followed in second place, followed by Sudan with 5.99% (3.39%), the U.S. with 4.68% (4.66%), and Spain 4.62% (4.83%).
A total of 88,546 bags of coffee were exported to Africa in November, a 16% market share up from 83,803 bags (16%) a month earlier. Algeria, Sudan, Morocco, Egypt, South Africa, and Kenya were among the African countries. The leading destination for Uganda’s coffee remained Europe, with a 70% share higher than 69% in November 2021.
