Liberia has commenced a year-long commemoration of the arrival of the first liberated slaves from the United States two centuries ago. After that, in 1847, they declared the country an independent republic.
Thousands of people gathered in Monrovia on Monday for a ceremony conducted by President George Weah and attended by a number of West African heads of state, celebrity musicians, and people from the diaspora, especially African-Americans.
Weah urged citizens of the West-African nation to succeed them as they celebrate the bi-centennial anniversary.
