The Nigerian Government has banned recruitment to Ukraine, stating that its citizens would not be enlisted to fight in the European country, where Russian forces have invaded and killed thousands and forcing many to flee.
This comes after allegations of purported volunteer recruitment in the country to fight on Ukraine’s side.
Nigeria’s foreign ministry said the Ukrainian embassy had denied any role in the alleged exercise.
According to a statement by the Ministry, the embassy verified that a number of Nigerians had approached it signalling their intent to join the battle.
The embassy also denied reports that each Nigerian volunteer will be charged $1,000 for a plane ticket and visa.
“Nigeria discourages the use of mercenaries anywhere in the world and will not tolerate the recruitment, in Nigeria, of Nigerians as mercenaries to fight in Ukraine or anywhere else in the world,” the ministry’s spokesperson said.
This comes only days after Senegal issued a warning against volunteers fighting Russians in Ukraine.
