Magosi Assumes Office as New Executive Secretary of SADC

Elias Mpedi Magosi is the new Executive Secretary of Southern African Development Community (SADC) whose tenure of office begins September 1, 2021.

Magosi, a citizen of the Republic of Botswana was sworn in as the Seventh SADC Executive Secretary at the 41st SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government held in Lilongwe, Republic of Malawi on August 18, 2021.

He replaces Stergomena Lawrence Tax who bid farewell to the SADC Heads of State and Government after serving for 8 years.

Up till the time of his appointment as SADC Executive Secretary, Magosi served as Acting Ambassador-at-large under the Ministry of International Affairs and Cooperation of the Republic of Botswana.

Before then, he was a Permanent Secretary in the Office of the President of the Republic of Botswana.

Magosi would be joining the SADC to help accelerate the implementation of the SADC Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020-2030, in particular, the Industrialization and Market Integration pillar.

The transformation of the SADC Parliamentary Forum into a regional parliament stems from recommendations coming out of meetings of the SADC Council of Ministers, particularly of the 2018 held in Windhoek, Namibia.

SADC comprises South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Comoros Islands, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, EswatĂ­ni, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
