A New Constitution Should be Transparent and True— Anthony Kila

Anthony Kila, Professor of Strategy & Development and Director General of CIAPS, while speaking on News Central’s TV show, Jasiri offered his perspective on the amendment of Nigeria’s constitution.

When questioned about the necessity of a new constitution and whether dialogue alone could achieve this, Prof. Kila explained that the demand for a new constitution is fundamentally a structural issue.

He emphasised that, for a new constitution to be effective, its initial principles must be transparent and truthful.
He said the present constitution is “illegitimate, flawed and not functional enough to meet our recent daily aspiration constraints and visions of the world”.

He noted that Nigerians are seeking a constitution that addresses diversity, ensures minority protections, eradicates oppression, and counters political interference.

Regarding whether President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is genuinely open to dialogue or merely seeking to placate public discontent without taking substantial action, Prof. Kila stated that the President’s background suggests a genuine interest in such discussions. He advised Nigerians to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Prof. Kila also emphasised that the process of constitutional change should involve everyone and that the constitution must be clear and address critical issues.

Regarding stabilising Nigeria’s economy amid insecurity, he remarked that sustainable growth and prosperity are unattainable without security. Watch more…
