One of the Nigerian schoolgirls abducted by Boko Haram terrorists from Chibok, Borno State in 2014 has been reunited with her family.
Official report says Ruth Ngladar Pogu and a man she is said to have married in captivity recently surrendered to the Nigerian military. The couple have two children.
Nearly 300 schoolgirls aged between 12 and 17, were abducted by Boko Haram in April 2014 from Chibok in Northeast Nigeria.
Since then, many of the abducted girls have been released or found by the military, but more than 100 are still missing after seven years of abduction.
Nigeria’s military forces are still fighting to end a 12-year war against insurgency in the country’s northeast, a conflict that has resulted in more than 40,000 deaths and displaced more than two million others.
Boko Haram first carried out mass school kidnappings in Nigeria but now, criminal gangs abduct schoolchildren for ransom from schools and colleges.
Nearly 1,000 pupils have been snatched in mass abductions since December 2020, mostly in the country’s northwestern and central states. While most have been released, some are still being held after months in captivity.
