On the 30th of May, more than 100 students of the Salihu Tanko Nursery & Primary School and Junior Secondary School students were abducted in Niger State. The students have been released on Thursday, 26th of August, after more than 80 days in captivity.
According to the AFP, the headteacher of the school who was also kidnapped at the time has been released and are currently in Minna, the capital of the state.
The release of the students comes days after the Principal of the school confirmed the death of the six of the students, revealing he informed of the unfortunate occurrence by the bandits.
The so-called bandits, terrorising Nigeria’s North West and the North Central had demanded a ransom of N110million to release the students but recently raised it up to N200million.
Niger State, which is a strategic point in Northern Nigeria has suffered a share of the bitter spoils of banditry and a deeply-rooted, yet growing kidnap-for-ransom business in the country.
Bandits have been responsible for various school abductions in Niger State, Kaduna State, Zamfara State and others.
