The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has announced that the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano dual carriageway will be completed and ready for use within 14 months.
Idris made the statement on Thursday during the inauguration of the rehabilitation of Section 1 of the road, which runs from Abuja to Kaduna.
The project comprises three sections:
- Section 1: Abuja to Kaduna
- Section 2: Kaduna to Zaria
- Section 3: Zaria to Kano
The rehabilitation involves scarifying and repurposing the existing road surface as sub-base material, filling embankments, and using reinforced concrete-lined drains. Additional work includes installing median barriers, hydraulic structures, and providing a 200mm thick continuously reinforced concrete pavement on the carriageway and shoulders.
Idris highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring the road is completed on schedule. He explained that the contract with the former contractor, who proposed a three-year timeline, was cancelled in favour of a faster approach.
“This government insists on completing the road in 14 months. The project was divided into three segments for efficiency, and delays of any kind will not be tolerated,” Idris stated.
Minister of Works David Umahi further explained that Section 1 starts at Zuba Junction in Abuja and ends at the Kaduna Western Bypass. The project includes a five-kilometre extension on the Abuja-Lokoja end and an extension to Aminu Kano International Airport.
Umahi also noted that the road, which will feature solar lighting, is designed to last 50–100 years. Emergency maintenance is currently underway on deteriorated sections to alleviate user difficulties.
“This road has suffered extensive damage over the years, with issues like cracks, potholes, and poor drainage. Repairs are progressing across four stretches simultaneously to accelerate the work,” Umahi said.
