Phase 1 of the Abuja Rail Mass Transit has successfully transported over 250,000 passengers in just over 100 days of operation, according to John Zhao, an official from the China Civil Engineering and Construction Company (CCECC), which constructed and operates this phase of the rail system. Zhao shared the update on his X account on Friday.
The rail system, consisting of two lines, has been running smoothly since its commercial launch. It covers a total distance of 45 kilometers, includes 12 stations, and can reach speeds of up to 100 km/h. Zhao noted that the rail line connects key areas such as the city center, the international airport, and the Kubwa satellite town, helping to ease traffic congestion in Abuja.

The Abuja Metro Rail began commercial operations on May 29, 2024, following its inauguration by President Bola Tinubu. President Tinubu also approved an extension of free train rides on the Abuja Rail Mass Transit for an additional six months, extending the offer until the end of the year. This followed an earlier announcement by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, who initially granted commuters two months of complimentary rides.
