Abdelraouf Abuzeid, a Sudanese man who was sentenced to death for the 2008 murder of an American diplomat, has been freed, according to his brother, who spoke to reporters on Monday.
Two years after a settlement was struck between the Sudanese government and John Granville’s family, Abuzeid, who was convicted guilty of killing the American envoy, was freed by the nation’s high court, according to his brother.
An inquiry for comments was not immediately answered by the US State Department.
On January 1, 2008, Granville was attacked while he was being brought home from the British Embassy in Khartoum. Authorities who obstruct his car’s path claim that he was ambushed by two gunmen.
Abdel Rahman Abbas, his driver, was instantly killed by the assailants. Granville suffered severe gunshot wounds to the chest and neck and passed away some hours after the attack.
Four days after the attack, a post by the militant Ansar al-Tawhid appeared on an Islamist website with a claim of responsibility.
