Italian giants, AC Milan announced on Friday that head coach, Stefano Pioli has been relieved of his duties. The sack comes two years after guiding them to the Serie A title

The statement said that Pioli “will be departing after the end of the current season, after having been in charge of the first team since October 2019”.

Milan will finish second this season, but at least 15 points behind their city rivals Inter, who clinched the title by beating Pioli’s team at the end of April.

After securing Milan’s first Scudetto in over a decade, Pioli took guided to the brink of a Champions League final the next season but fell short against Inter Milan in the semis. An early exit from the tournament this season and failure stay close to their rivals in the title race set the alarm bells.

In a farewell statement, the Milan Board said “AC Milan extends heartfelt thanks to Stefano Pioli and his entire staff for… securing an unforgettable League title and re-establishing AC Milan’s consistent presence in the top European competition. Stefano’s professionalism and human touch have significantly contributed to the growth of the squad, embodying the Club’s core values from day one.”

The 58-year-old manager expressed his gratitude to AC Milan “for the opportunity to be part of the history of this glorious Club.”
