Ademola Lookman scored a crucial late goal to secure Atalanta’s 2-1 victory over AC Milan on Friday, propelling the club to the top of Serie A and fueling dreams of a historic first league title.
The Nigerian forward nodded in his 10th league goal of the season with just three minutes remaining at the Gewiss Stadium, where fans erupted into chants of “We’re gonna win the league.” Lookman’s strike marked Atalanta’s ninth consecutive Serie A win, equalling a club record and placing them two points ahead of Napoli, who play Lazio on Sunday.
Lookman remained focused on the task ahead, stating, “We believe in ourselves as a team. It’s match-by-match for us.”
Atalanta took the lead early through Charles De Ketelaere’s thumping header, only for Alvaro Morata to equalise for Milan. However, Lookman’s late winner ensured all three points for the Bergamo side.
Milan coach Paulo Fonseca expressed frustration with the officiating, claiming Atalanta’s opener involved a foul on Theo Hernandez. “The referee officiated against Milan,” he said, as his team languishes in seventh place, 12 points behind Atalanta.
Atalanta now prepares for a Champions League clash with Real Madrid on Tuesday, where a victory would bolster their chances of direct qualification for the last 16.
Meanwhile, reigning champions Inter kept their title hopes alive with a 3-1 win over Parma, thanks to goals from Federico Dimarco, Nicolo Barella, and Marcus Thuram. Inter remain unbeaten in 14 matches and sit four points behind Atalanta with a game in hand.
The Serie A title race is heating up, with Atalanta leading the charge and dreaming big.
