Embattled Ghana coach Otto Addo, stressed the importance of securing a victory against Sudan in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Tuesday in order to enhance their prospects of qualifying for the 2025 finals.
“We have to win,” the 49-year-old in a second stint as Black Stars boss told reporters after they were held 0-0 at home by Sudan in a third-round Group F clash.
Team Ghana, which has been champions of Africa four times, missed several clear opportunities to secure a goal in Accra. They are seven points behind Angola and two points behind Sudan at the halfway stage of qualifying matches.
At the end of matchday 6 in November, the two top teams will qualify for the 24-team finals. Ghana last won this competition in 1982 in Tripoli, and the last time they failed to qualify was 21 years ago.
Ghana is facing a tough battle for survival in the Libyan city of Benghazi, where team Sudan is currently based, due to being unable to play at home because of the civil war in their country.
“Where we finish is in our hands,” added Otto, referring to a team led by Mohammed Kudus from West Ham. The team was missing Thomas Partey from Arsenal, another Premier League midfielder who was absent due to injury.
