Several African leaders have congratulated US President-elect Donald Trump, who claimed victory in the November 5 presidential election.
The Republican Party candidate reclaimed the presidency based on projections released on Wednesday. In an address in Florida on Wednesday, Trump stated that he “overcame challenges that no one believed” he would.
The Electoral College will meet in December to confirm the 2024 presidential election results, and the new US president will be sworn in on January 20, 2025.
Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud described Trump’s victory as “historic”, adding that he was eager to continue the robust collaboration and partnership to promote peace, security, and mutual prosperity for the two nations.
Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye also congratulated Trump: “I look forward to strengthening the Burundi-USA cooperation.”
Nigeria’s leader, Bola Tinubu, said that Trump’s administration would pave the way for both countries to “enhance economic collaboration, encourage peace, and tackle global issues impacting our people.” adding that Trump’s reelection to the White House “will open the door to a period of sincere, and mutually beneficial economic and development alliances between Africa and the United States.”
President Felix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) said in a statement on X that he is “prepared to work alongside the newly elected American president to enhance the strategic partnership between the DRC and the US, which already enjoy strong friendly and cooperative ties.”
Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema remarked on X that Trump’s historic accomplishment reflects the people’s right to select their leaders, further expressing Zambia’s eagerness to “enhance our bilateral collaboration and deepen our relationship” with the US.
In his message of congratulations to Trump, Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa stated: “The globe requires more leaders who advocate for the people. Zimbabwe is prepared to collaborate with you and the American populace to create a better, prosperous, and peaceful world.”
South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa said his country looked forward to “continuing the close and mutually beneficial partnership” with the US. Ramaphosa added: “In the global arena, we look forward to our presidency of the G20 in 2025, where we will work closely with the US who will succeed us in the G20 presidency in 2026.”
Kenya’s President William Ruto termed Trump’s win a “testament to the firm resolve of the American people to repose confidence” in the president-elect’s “visionary, bold and innovative leadership.”
Egypt’s President Abdelfattah El-Sisi congratulated US President-elect Donald Trump and wished him all the best in advancing the interests of the American people.
