The African Union (AU) has urged for calm and called for dialogue following opposition protests in Kenya that have turned violent and left three people dead since last week.
Following last year’s election, opposition leader Raila Odinga called for protests against the high cost of living and what he calls electoral fairness.
In a statement, AU Chairperson, Moussa Faki Mahamat asked stakeholders to be patient and participate in conversations to settle disputes.
Mahamat claimed that the 2022 elections were “successfully” conducted and that the Supreme Court upheld the results.
“The Chairperson reiterates the total solidarity with and support to the government and the people of Kenya’s efforts working towards national unity, peace and stability in the country,” the statement said.
Kenyan religious leaders have also called for unconditional talks between President William Ruto and opposition leader, Raila Odinga.
