African Union Holds Second Reflection Forum in Accra

The African Union (AU) opened its second-ever Reflection Forum on Unconstitutional Changes of Government (UCGs) in Accra. The historic event which covers policy recommendations and discourse on the situation of political instability on the continent is set to be held from Monday, 18 to Tuesday 19 of March 2024.

The AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, highlighted the significance of the event considering current realities, he said: “The Accra II process underscores the AU’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and ensuring sustainable security in Africa.”

The Second Reflection Forum will also provide a chance to assess advancements made following the 2022 Accra Reflection meeting and pinpoint opportunities for enhancement. Discussions on strengthening national ownership of governance procedures, strengthening democratic governance, and improving cooperation between AU institutions and partners will be held by participants.

The AU is unwavering in its resolve to assist member states in preserving democratic values and promoting sustainable development as Africa proceeds on its path toward greater political stability and prosperity.

The official invitation to the Reflection Forum on Unconstitutional Changes in Africa stated “the objective of the Forum is to reflect on the phenomenon of Unconstitutional Changes of  Government (UCG) in Africa with the aim of proffering enduring solutions to the problem.”
