Coronavirus Infections Exceed 1.2 Million in Africa

The number of coronavirus infections in Africa rose to over 1.2 million on the continent.

Africa with a population of 1.3 billion people as of Tuesday, September 1, 2020, based on the latest United Nations estimates, has confirmed a total of 1,257,427 Covid-19 cases.

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), in a statement late Monday night, confirmed the figure for people with the virus in Africa.

The center said 29,589 people have died from COVID-19-related deaths, while 975,643 patients have recovered from the virus to date.

Southern Africa, which has the least total population on the continent, about 68 million people, recorded the highest number of cases at 670,084; North Africa, which has 246 million people, has confirmed 228,417 cases of infections; West Africa, population 401,861,254 , recorded 159,960 cases while Eastern Africa, population 445,405,606, recorded 133,104 cases.

South Africa has the highest number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the continent, standing at 625,056, according to latest statistics released by the country’s Health Minister Zweli Mkhize.

A total of 14,028 people have died from coronavirus-driven deaths in the continent’s most developed economy.

At least 538,604 people have recovered from the virus in South Africa, which suggests an 80% recovery rate.
