Africa’s COVID-19 infections Hit 1,398,993, Deaths 33,706

Confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in Africa as of Saturday, 19 September 2020 stood at 1,398,993, according to worldometers.

Worldometer is a platform which manually analyzes, validates, and aggregates data from thousands of sources in real time and provides global COVID-19 live statistics for a wide audience of caring people around the world.

Data from the platform has been used by the Johns Hopkins; the UK, Thailand, and Vietnam governments as well as a wide range of media outlets.

According to the platform, Africa also recorded 33,706 total deaths from the virus as of 3.13pm Saturday.

South Africa is the worst-affected country on the continent, having registered 657,627 cases and 15,857 fatalities.

The figures represent 47.5 percent of Africa’s caseload and 47.2 percent of its deaths.

Egypt is the second-hardest-hit country in Africa, having recorded 101,772 infections and 5,733 fatalities.

The two countries are the only ones in Africa to have registered more than 100,000 COVID-19 cases.

Further on, Morocco (94,504), Ethiopia (66,913) and Nigeria (56,735) are the only other African countries that have reported more than 50,000 infections.

In terms of deaths, Morocco (1,714), Algeria (1,654), Nigeria (1,093) and Ethiopia (1,060) are the only other African countries that have recorded more than 1,000 deaths besides South Africa and Egypt.

In better news, Africa has reported a total of 1,146,090successful recoveries by Friday.
