Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has condemned governors for illegally dissolving and taking over local government administration notwithstanding the Supreme Court’s decision, calling the action treasonable.

Fagbemi made the remarks on Wednesday during the opening ceremony of an event hosted by the Nigeria Bar Association in Abuja.

Fagbemi, represented by the Director of Civil Appeals, Ministry of Justice, Tijani Gazali, stated that despite the Supreme Court’s decision and a provision in the Constitution prohibiting state governors from interfering with the operation of local government councils, some governors and their state assemblies continue to dissolve elected local government councils in violation of the Constitution.

He also criticised state Attorney Generals and Commissioners for Justice for failing to provide legal guidance to their governors, and he demanded a heavy penalty for any governor who continued to engage in such illegal behaviour.

    Details shortly.
