Google has unveiled its 2024 Hustle Academy cohort applications with an upgraded curriculum which strongly focuses on Artificial Intelligence (AI) integration.

The programme, dedicated to empowering small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) across Sub-Saharan Africa, addresses critical challenges such as limited access to funding and essential business skills needed to drive business growth.

With an unresolved funding need of $5.2 trillion annually among formal SMBs in developing countries, the Hustle Academy aims to bridge this gap through comprehensive business education, mentorship, and networking opportunities.

Since its inception in 2022, the Hustle Academy has made significant strides, benefiting over 10,000 businesses and doubling success rates in accessing new funding sources.

This success has also translated into job creation, with an average of four new jobs for every 10 graduating businesses.

The programme’s Head of B2B Marketing, SSA, Kristy Grant, stresses the transformative potential of AI for African SMBs, and its role in driving innovation, enhancing efficiency, and unlocking economic growth.

“Artificial intelligence (AI) holds immense potential for African small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), enabling them to drive innovation, increase efficiency, and unlock new levels of economic growth.

“The Hustle Academy has supported over 10,000 businesses who have gone ahead to raise funding and create jobs since inception.

“By incorporating AI into our curriculum, we aim to further amplify this impact, equipping SMBs to harness AI technologies for improved business performance and economic progress,” Grant says.

The new AI-focused modules in the curriculum concentrate on data-driven decision-making, operational optimisation, and AI-powered marketing strategies.

The participants will explore practical applications led by expert trainers to master cutting-edge AI skills and strategies through modules like “Boost Your Productivity with AI” and “Marketing Strategy and AI”.

This will equip them with the tools to streamline operations and enhance digital outreach.

Additionally, participants will have the opportunity to network with fellow entrepreneurs, build valuable connections, and receive personalised insights and actionable advice from dedicated mentors.

Applications for the 2024 cohort are now open to SMBs in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, with the programme set to run throughout the year.
