According to Josep Borrell, the chief diplomat for the EU in Sudan, the ambassador was attacked on Monday while conflict between opposing generals engulfed the country.

Aidan O’Hara, a seasoned Irish diplomat, serves as the EU’s ambassador to Sudan.

“A few hours ago, the EU Ambassador in Sudan was assaulted in his own residency,” Borrell wrote on Twitter, without detailing any injuries to the envoy.

“Security of diplomatic premises and staff is a primary responsibility of Sudanese authorities and an obligation under international law,” he added.

EU spokeswoman Nabila Massrali told newsmen that the ambassador was “OK” following the assault.

“The security of the staff is our priority,” she said. “The EU delegation has not been evacuated. Security measures are being assessed.”

After three days of urban combat, the Sudanese army and a rival paramilitary organisation have engaged in fighting that has resulted in 200 deaths and 1,800 injuries.

International organisations, including the European Union, have expressed great concern and called for an immediate ceasefire.
