Former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has revealed that labour leader Joe Ajaero is under investigation for alleged terrorism financing and related offences, and is currently barred from leaving Nigeria.
“There is an ongoing investigation, and Ajaero cannot leave the country,” Amachree stated during an appearance on Channels Television’s *Politics Today* on Tuesday. “He must remain in Nigeria while the investigation continues.”
Amachree further explained, “Ajaero is accused of terrorism financing, and even if he wanted to leave the country, where would he go? The primary suspect, Andrew Wynne, who is accused of financing terrorism, is his tenant and currently in London. I doubt Ajaero would go to London without engaging with him, as Wynne is making statements from there.”
He clarified that the investigation into Ajaero is personal and separate from his role as President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Amachree suggested that Ajaero had likely been under surveillance, leading to his detainment at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Monday morning.
The former DSS official also alleged that had Ajaero been allowed to travel to the UK, he could have fled the country, comparing the situation to that of wanted Binance executive Nadeem Anjarwalla.
“Ajaero has a case to answer regarding terrorism, and he is not above the law,” Amachree said, urging Nigerian authorities to work toward extraditing Wynne from the UK for questioning.
Ajaero, who was arrested Monday morning and released around midnight, had been en route to the UK for a Trade Union Congress (TUC) event. While in custody, he was questioned about alleged involvement in terrorism financing linked to Wynne, who has been declared wanted. Both Ajaero and Wynne have denied the allegations.
